Please check these FAQs before emailing us your question!  Answers to almost all of the questions we get can be found here or elsewhere on the website. If youre questions still aren't answered, then feel free to ask us.

How do I sign up for a hike?

 

It's easy! First, you need to be a member of the hiking club for the current semester. Then, just go to our Schedule and Signup page, find a hike that you want to go on, enter your UNI, and pay with PayPal! That's all there is to it.

How do I become a member?

 

In order to become a member of the hiking club, you must first be a member of Columbia's Dodge Fitness Center (DFC). Many but not all Columbia schools include DFC membership as part of their mandatory fees. Hiking Club membership costs $15 per semester. See the membership page for more detailed information.

What kind of physical shape do I need to be in?

 

Each hike is rated in terms of difficulty that ranges from an easier walk in the woods to a strenuous hike that requires a degree of past experience.  If you have any specific concerns, contact the hike leader who will be able to give you further details about the route.

What equipment do I need for a day trip?

What if I don't have all the gear required for an overnight?

 

Oftentimes gear can be shared among backpackers- at the pre-trip meeting, ask other hikers if you can borrow what you need.  If not, check out COOP and consider renting

Can I show up and pay on the morning of the hike?

 

No.  You must sign up and pay by the Wednesday before the hike.

The trip is full but I am a small person and I know another small person / boyfriend / girlfriend.  Can we squeeze into a seat or sit on each others laps? 

 

Are you kidding me?  Nope, sorry, only twelve people fit in the van.

Can my friend who doesn't go to Columbia, Barnard, or an affiliated institution go on the hike?

 

No.  We cannot bring along friends.  To go on a hike, you must be a member of the Dodge Fitness Center and a member of the Hiking Club.

Can I bring alcohol?

 

No.  Club sports has a zero tolerance policy for alcohol or drug consumption.  Please don't get us in trouble!

Can I bring my dog?

 

Your dog cannot be transported in our vans.  If you have your own transportation, then contact the trip leaders to ask.

What if I'm not sure I'm ready to lead a hike?

 

Let us know you are interested and we can suggest a person for you to co-lead with in order to get the hang of it.  Or sign up for a hike and make friends with the leader to find out what kind of preparation is necessary.

I don't know where to lead a hike. What should I do?

 

We have books and maps available at request.  Also we have a subscription to trails.com, information available upon request. Let us know and we can help you.
