Hike Schedule - February 2009

Dayhike to Anthony's Nose - Saturday 02/07
Leader: Emily
From the guidebook "Exploring the Appalachian Trail: Hikes in the Mid-Atlantic States":
A great river offers the focus for this walk. Powerful mountain-building forces first molded the stark relief of this Hudson River gorge, then glacial action carved a 15-mile-long fjord here. Human beings shaped the land too: Native American encampments, colonial exploration, Revolutionary War combat, 19th- and 20th-century commerce, and the conservation movement all made their mark.
Will also stop at the Eagle Fest in the afternoon on the way back.

Dayhike to Breakneck Ridge - Sunday 02/15
Leader: Brian
From the "60 Hikes..." guidebook:
Stupendous views, rock-scrambling, and strenuous climbs are a good part of what this thrilling jaunt is about, with a special accent on strenous. This is one of the more memorable hikes in the Highlands ... don't try it without sturdy hiking boots and plenty of water. [The] rugged trail crosses two elevated, forested ridges, yielding stunning views of the Hudson River and mountains on either bank, and passes extensive ruins of a dairy farm.
Transportation for this hike will be on Metro-North Railroad. Meet at 8:00 AM at Amsterdam and 116th as usual. Train fare is covered by the hike fee.

Dayhike to Fitzgerald Falls - Sunday 02/22
Leader: Brian
From the "60 Hikes..." guidebook:
Near the start of this exciting trek lies Fitzgerald Falls, a waterfall so dynamic that you may wonder what could possibly follow as an encore. Don't worry: High drama is the norm for a wild stretch of trail that is generously peppered with rocky vistas and rugged gorges, in addition to a bayou boardwalk and romantic lake.
